Disco Demolition Night preceded, and may have helped precipitate, the decline of disco in late 1979; some scholars and disco artists have debated whether the event was expressive of racism and homophobia.
Even back then, the subversives were trotting out the same tired arguments. It was racist, it was anti-gay, it was just like the Nazi book burnings, it was a bunch of bigoted white men who were afraid of being replaced, etc. The media has been evil for a very long time. Potentially always.
It was between games in a doubleheader, and so much damage was done, the White Sox had to forfeit the second game--it was only the fourth forfeit in Major League Baseball history.
I’m a huge baseball fan and love learning baseball history. I’ve heard about this. I was born in 80 so disco was passé by the time I grew up but I was always retro and I actually like disco music. But that backlash is impressive
100%. Last game I went to was done in under two hours!
The whole point of going to a baseball game is to while away an entire day. It's the fault of the zero-attention-span generations created by the portable internet nodes in everyone's pockets.
Baseball went sideways when they made us pay twice for a doubleheader.
Mark Buehrle's perfect game, pitching as quickly as he could, just barely got under the two-hour mark.
Hate the clock? Blame the batters for stepping out of the box to adjust their gloves, helmets, and all the other crap they wear--and doing this every pitch. Derek Jeter was notorious for this.
The umpires HAD rules to make the batter and the pitcher get on with it, but they never enforced them. I can quote the exact rules right now if you want.
Just because you got used to it doesn't make it baseball. The designated shitter has existed for 50 years, and that's not baseball either. Face your opposing pitcher or leave the game.
Pitch clock: Blame the players who keep stepping out of the box between pitches, adjusting their gloves and helmets, dilly-dallying in all sorts of ways, AND the umpires for letting them do it instead of enforcing Rules 8.04 and 6.02b, which were already on the books and gives the umpire the power to keep things moving.
"Some bullshit gadget": Blame Angel Hernandez. The one-man argument for robo-umps. Did you know he once sued MLB claiming they were being racist against him for not letting him ump playoff games? No, it's because you SUCK, Hernandez.
Yeah, promotions are mostly buying an inflated ticket with some piece of merch for exclusivity that I've seen. It definitely won't be an exact redux, but more that something that seems smaller and insignificant, even unserious will spark the powder keg of public opinion backlash.
Incredible

It was a publicity stunt gone horribly wrong.

Fitting name, because baseball hasn't existed since the National League adopted the designated shitter, which is not baseball.
Same for the extra-innings runner, which is not baseball.
Not to mention the pitch clock and the fact that home plate umpires will be replaced by video or some such bullshit gadget.
I think I'm the only guy at work who thinks this is bull. Makes the game go too fast if you ask me.

I find this highly unlikely.

Will check it out. Actually cataloging baseball cards as I type this.
God, Comiskey was great.
Reminds me of the dime beer promotion in Cleveland..
