I would not assume this "came out of nowhere." Ethan is always surrounded by drama and trolls and this tweet is probably a troll back at them. It's just his style. The "loli community" is a niche of a niche anyway, so it's not exactly a bad business decision to throw them under the bus.
The only problem I have with guys like him and Sargon is they immediately conflate the people liking anime with cute little characters with the people whacking it to sexualized illustrations of underage girls. (while many are definitely doing that, I don't think people attacking "loli" are making that distinction) However that is the mainstream opinion. Weirdos sperging on twitter don't matter.
At least with Sargon it wasn't a big performance, he addressed it directly on an Archcast stream when asked on his position and moved on.
This is a Twitter post and so is like shouting out of your window than quietly addressing it if you are asked about it.
I've gone past that point and my issue is with people applying real life standards to fictional content. The loli stuff is like a unsupervised hot plate compared to the raging forest fire of trans/LGBT shit in society in which is more dangerous to kids.
Most of the time it's a bait and switch as they'd love the right to attack anime more thanks to its surge in popularity (thanks to how shit western entertainment is) so conflate loli to mean pedo when it is a body type, it's the context it's used in that matters. Same way daddy has different meanings to being used in a slice of life show about a family to a porn video.
