They understand it perfectly fine. You just don't understand how they value things.

They value your things as valuable.
They value their things as not valuable.
They see you as outside of their moral universe, deserving of all levels of violence.

Therefore, they are allowed, morally, to kill you and steal your property; while telling you that you have no right to kill anyone stealing your property.
