Empathy doesn't do anything, it's just the Left's rhetorical tactic to try and change the target of people's frustration from the criminal class that are being used to support anachro-tyranny; and re-direct it towards institutions that the Left seeks to capture. Empathy, as a term, is simply used to try and trick the listener into associating whatever the Left is proposing as inherently good.
This is why, in my list of redefined words, I say:
When they say Empathy, they mean Enabling.
Now, (as is often the case) the Left set up a false dichotomy with an accurate criticism of a strawman; when they talk about the bad life that some of these people have led; and that there are institutional failures that are abundant. But they never accept that it is their institutions that have failed.

As progressives you have sought collective ownership, and you have robbed people of investing in their own wealth.

You have required that the police operate beyond mere criminal law, and are now the arbiters of basic morality; and are the first people you go to to solve your problems because you've institutionalized your individual problems.

Thanks to the Kennedy admin's take-over and """""reform""""" of the mental health industry. The state run asylum systems were closed. For the past 5 decades, mental health has been the domain of the political Left, and their entire focus is on prescribing drugs, and out-patient care. The purpose of the asylum systems was to allow mentally ill people to live a safe, guarded, and medically observed community that would do the least damage to both them and society. The primary goal of all current mental health facilities is to reduce costs by putting unwell people out onto the street, and holding sane people hostage to extract as much money as possible from their insurers.
We've never had more mental health facilities in the US than we do now, and the level of mental illness in the US has never been higher; and the highest rates are among Left-wing women. Not to mention, the entirety of both traditional and social media is to condition people to poor psychological health with catastrophization, emotional incontinence, and the normalization of narcissism.
In the end, Leftists are entirely structured around power relationships. Useful Idiots are cultivated to "love-bomb" factions that are proscribed to them by leadership; and to "hate-bomb" factions that are proscribed to them by leadership. Social Reinforcement is all that matters, so they will then be love-bombed for the correct interaction. There are no principles involved, and they do not care for one moment about anyone but themselves. They are telling themselves they are good people because people are telling them they are good people. Nothing else exists in that equation. They would gleefully beat a child to death with a pipe if Anderson Cooper told them it made them a hero. Why they are beating them to death is irrelevant.
