There were a lot of his supporters who claimed he was something other than an egotistical nitwit who would choose “avenge petty ego injury” over “be professional and act for the good of the people” every time those options were before him. This has been part of the bargain with him from day one, hoping to ride the storm of his bitch-fits so that in his calmer moments he would get positive things done.
