They used that since their inception. I used to give them credit for sticking with it for so long, as I think it was just about 5 years ago they dropped it.
It was also on the Spirit of St. Louis that Lindbergh used to fly across the Atlantic. It was written in the nose cone by the plane builders as a symbol of good luck. As far as I'm concerned the swastika is not a Nazi symbol just because the Nazis used it.
