It's because the Civil War was not in fact about slavery despite the decades of historical revisionism that took place to vilify the situation. It was about secession and that's all it ever was about. The northern states knew they couldn't survive without the south, and that's all it was.

I know some people who know next to NOTHING about how Germany was formed, obviously also nothing about what came before(with the small little states).
They also pretend that the north changed their viewpoint immediately after the civil war from slavery acceptance to complete integration. IOW they act like the Civil Rights Act was only needed against Southerners.
Even Germans don't know any history outside of NAZIs bad. That's like 90% of history in German schools.

Finding out you're German is basically hearing how evil Nazis are and asking why we haven't killed them all off. Then being told.
