I downloaded spec ops recently and the map design is so linear and the shooting so devoid of feel that I couldn't give it enough time to get into the story. Is it actually good?
I never understood how everyone and their grandmother sucked themselves into a frenzy over this game. Like, hey look at us, we are so deep and put themes and shit in our game. And commentary. Same thing with bioshock. I never got how any of this is clever when you're forced to do what the designers want you to do. Disclaimer: I haven't played it, nor do I ever want to. I have played Bioshok, though. Stopped after the twist.
I actually read somewhere that the only reason for The Line to have these story-beats is that they ran out of money to make the game they actually wanted.
The second half certainly is a wild ride that can be called good in its own way, though it requires being unspoiled for it to work. The way you feel about the gameplay and maps is intentional as well, so don't worry about that.
Oh good. Yet more vaperware hyperprojects like that 200 mile long city.
Oh, you mean, did you mean "Spec-Ops: The Line"
Because that's totally what's going to happen.

"You, the player, are evil for doing this thing required to advance the plot."
That's it. That's the game.

( I haven't played it yet )
A steam keys only a few quid but it'd still say don't bother.
