Ukraine was "any day now" too. Not saying it definitely will happen, but with the posturing going on from the US and China, it could pop off at any moment.
I was listening to this week's Viva Fri and Barnes livestream in the background, it was interesting Barnes take on China given the balloon thing.
He was arguing that China militarily is set up more defensively while America is all about offense. There are some in American military command pushing for not just a conflict with China but all full on invasion and land war with China and the balloon was embarrassing for their plans as it indicated China DID have ways to target the US offensively where America is very weak in terms of infrastructure.
It's an interesting perspective that I'd partly agree with because we all know how war hawkish America has been for a century now, but thanks to Hong Kong and border skirmishes between China and India that doesn't mean China is innocent in this so two things can be the true at the sane time
China has over a billion people, they can afford to lose 300 million in civilian casualties. We can't. War with China (or Russia, or any other nuclear power) is fucking suicide.
If China does invade it won't be like Ukraine. It will be done in a day while the United States still has its dick in its hand. There will not be an option for it to be a proxy war, and it would be purely offensive on the part of the United States.
If it's inevitable, which I think it is only if America insists on disrupting the status quo, then fast and decisive is much better than slow and grindy.
During the reunification wars of China in the early 20th century a warlord had a field full of metal spikes surrounding his castle. The attacking army charged through the field and ran on top of their comrades.
During the Korean war the generals used human waves to take over bases. Eventually the machine guns overheated and the base was taken. Imagine piles of bodies used as trenches.
If mainland China attacks Taiwan there won't be anyone left. The people in Taiwan are well aware of this and post the darkest memes.
Almost like they are egging it on
Fight! Fight! Fight!

I have friends in Taiwan, I worry about this stuff all the time.

That level of brutality would not be necessary because of the extreme asymmetry between the two sides.
As my cousin who grew up in east Germany said, "it's always fun to be the one between the two nuclear powers."
Oh yeah, if America decides to uh- liberate- Taiwan after China takes it the inhabitants are fucked.
We did it, Patrick! We saved Taiwan!
Pretty much.
Hey, that's like global warming predictions, only this could actually happen.
Why doesn't China just colonize Africa? Everyone would be up in arms but nobody would protect an African shithole like they did Ukraine.
Don't tell me because it's an African shithole. Obviously they have enough people to flood new lands with Chinese colonials.
