It's basically a religion. I watched as a group of people on discord all got back from a convention and one by one they each posted up their test results as if it was some sort of ritual or group activity.
As someone who didn't mind masks as much as the rest of the folks here, masks on planes are the worst.
It's one thing to wear a mask when you're going into a store for 5 minutes, but 2-3 hours of not being able to breathe properly, no thanks.
I don't think this will be followed by any place outside the US. Even when masks were mandatory on planes in European countries, I do recall about 3/4 of people took them off when they took their seat.

You "don't mind masks as much as the rest of the folks here" because we, as people who do real work for a living, had to wear them 8 hours a fuckin' day, 5 days a week, or be out of a job. "Oooh, 2 hours is so rough, I'm so glad no real humans needed to wear them longer than that, mask mandates nao!"

That's pretty bad, no denying that. I'm just speaking from personal experience. I haven't had to do that, nor has anyone I know.

I don't support mask mandates. I'm just saying that there is a real difference between a small inconvenience, like 5 minutes, and a serious imposition like having to wear them for hours and hours.
I'll be surprised if they get airlines to reinstate it in the US. I've been surprised before though.
My thought on it is the vast majority of normal non-raging leftist people wore them to avoid harassment. There were plenty of people who wanted to be the mask enforcers and not just mind their own business. If I had to guess, at least in mainland Europe, people tended to leave others alone. When masks were "strongly recommended" here during the height of the apocalypse talk, a minority was wearing them.

People are just dying for a way to exercise power over others. That is the unfortunate reality.

At least in my experience, in 2020 nearly everyone followed the rules (as did I), though I didn't see any harassment of people who didn't.
I think the main difference is that the issue did not get politicized. Both left and right here dislike masks and dumped them the moment the government (and many even before) stopped forcing them (except for the odd Asian). You neither have the religious reverence for masks that the American left has, nor as much opposition as from Republicans.
It's not that it wasn't required. It was just that people wouldn't obey, and there were apparently too many for the flight crew to do (or try to do) something about it.
I did in the very beginning because I was trying to minimize touching my face and still thought the CDC was trustworthy by virtue of being the CDC. It didn't last.
Jesus Christ when are they gonna give up talking about the kung flu it's a joke of a cold and was never that serious

People are bonding over their hysteria.

I had to wear it to the gym too, granted I got a pretty bullshit mask that didn't cover my mouth/nose for that but it still sucked.
Real work? I did real work 50+ hours a week and never had to wear a mask during the kung flu

Maybe they realized that it was a bit silly.
Meanwhile in Seattle, I saw people driving on their own with mask on.
People still do that and I see it daily over on the east coast
I still see that happening around here. It makes me angry.

I even followed the arrows in Walmart.
I thought the CDC was trustworthy in that I thought masks might very well be effective cause they initially said not to use them.
I figured they were like nuclear power plants or semiconductor factories where there's a certain IQ baseline required to get a job there. Haha. Lol.
I've heard that complaint a lot. I did the same when I went to the store, which is a 5 min drive. I didn't bother to take it off when going there.
