Al Jolson is an absolutely excellent entertainer, and a ton of American folk music comes from the popularity of Minstrel Shows in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Worse, Progressives of the era thought that "Negrophillia" would be a good solution to any racial animosity while espousing and normalizing White Supremacism and the Neo-Confederate narratives about slavery. So, instead of just allowing Minstrel Shows to just adapt over time, they decided to hype up the racialism.
