Because no one seems to think it a real possibility. And Americans are getting sloppy.

I'm reminded of Fahrenheit 451. Hedonistic population engages in pointless consumerism and escapes into media and other trifles, all the while bombers soar overhead to parts unknown and you'd miss the lines mentioning them if you weren't paying attention. The book ends in nuclear holocaust.
