I say if Portugal wants to live up to their traditional role as Europe's shithole, let them. Embrace it. Make Portugal the official immigration hub of the EU, where all immigrants and refugees must first go to apply for asylum or a visa. They can live there indefinitely until their request is approved. Apparently people from more countries bringing more diversity is an objective good, so this would be a welcome move.

I'm not one to automatically believe either polls or election results, but when you have such a plurality of support for an issue across political lines (no doubt thanks to the false choices that liberal democratic regimes put forward each cycle), it doesn't sound very controversial. Are they strongly against it? Is their anti-immigrant party making noise, or steadily gaining support? If I see strong evidence that the commoners want to expel foreigners and embrace traditional culture, I'll table my proposal for the time being.
