Modern writers have no idea about passing the torch. You are right though. It does seem to serve the purpose of crapping on what came before
If people cared, we wouldn't be in the situation we are today.
I wouldn't care about a passing the torch entry in a series if it wasn't just being used as a way for hateful communists to mock and tear down a beloved story.
That was literally the premise of the original Santa Clause, except the torch wasn't so much passed as unintentionally grave-robbed.
