Humans are still biologically, and evolutionarily, apes. They're just technological apes. But I would bet dollars to doughnuts that the ancestors of chimps/bonobos and humans (and possibly also gorillas) used simple tools, and ate meat on an opportunistic basis. Humans just wound up being technological specialists in the course of their evolutionary history, thanks to genetic bottlenecks and climate change, as well as migratory habits/willingness to invade new biomes.
