Nixon's mistake was doing it all in secret. He should have been more like today's government mobsters and tried to make everything "legal". Get a crooked judge to sign off on a warrant and he could have had the FBI grab those documents for him.
He did win in a landslide. It is also my understanding that, like Hunter Biden's laptop, the public was largely in the dark about this prior to the election. That may not have mattered to a significant proportion of the public anyway, looking at that electoral college outcome.
And yet again this is why I say Watergate is no big deal compared to stuff we see now

That is a good point. If he did it in secret, there may have been a reason we will never really know.
It makes me wonder if Nixon's team even did it, or were stuck holding deliberate fall guys planted.
He was. Everyone I've ever talked to from Nixon's era loved him.
