Martin doesn't actually care about his series. He likes the idea of his series and that it being an HBO show means he doesn't actually have to write because he hates writing. Before he was world famous he was a competent writer because he needed to produce. Now he doesn't need to produce and he has no desire to finish anything.

I honestly believe if HBO hadn’t adapted GOT the series would’ve been done a long time ago

100% he would have still needed to listen to his editor and agent and the deadlines would have been hard deadlines.
