Except they do. They own the rights to a very specific portion of Tolkiens works and they got to fuck with it and pretend it's cannon.

I dont know how much IP they can use, but they cant even call the Hobbits by their name, Hobbits arent "Hobbits" because they dont own the rights to them. Who knows what else.
