When you're facing 15 years, and the offer is 6 months, the reality is that you're not guilty. Nobody guilty is getting a 6 month plea on a 15 year crime.
One example I have seen of this is how the feds are arm twisting some weebs caught with hentai manga which supposedly have "child porn", which is in reality just drawn anime lolis or some shit, AFTER the US Supreme Court ruled that criminalizing this was against the Constitution. The feds said "fuck that, we are going to prosecute people anyway, and just change tactics to come at them with threats of decades in prison and then offer them a tiny amount of time if they'll plead guilty". Everyone always pleas guilty because they're cowards and are complicit in what amounts to a racket because they don't want to be the test case.
It's disgusting, and the more that it is allowed to happen, the more it is going to happen. Judges should be putting a stop to it and working against it, but none of them give a fuck.
