They were fucking in front of them to show how "normal" polyamory is and trying to recruit them into their sick lifestyle. I think grooming is an appropriate description of what happened.

I missed that bit. Nor did I see anything in the story that suggested deliberate grooming for sex, but then I didn't read the thing very closely.
