As a Huey Long appreciator, it is silly on its face to not expect an elite class to use positions of power to enrich themselves, their friends, and their families. The problem is when they do so without providing any benefits to the ruled. We find ourselves in the worst case scenario where the elites are enriching themselves through the gleeful annihilation of those they govern.
Huey Long was 100% a crook, but Louisiana was better off because of him.
Sometimes that's actually one of the benefits of a proper crook in power.
If he's your crook, he can actually keep you protected because he wants to protect his territory, and he'll buy your loyalty on the regular. When you're already a group being targeted by crooks, having somebody even more dirty is a high-risk, high-reward game. Your biggest threat is if he completely sells you the fuck out at some point. The 2nd biggest threat is that he's so charismatic that he actually sells you out and you keep voting for him.
If everybody's dirty, it's quite hard to argue for integrity, because an integrous system only works as you purge out all of the corruption. You can't half-ass it. Either everybody's clean, or nobody is.
It really is bad enough to look the other way when they can at least benefit everyone else while at it. But this is fucking ridiculous.
if an elected official is enriching we the people instead of wallmart, amazon, disney or other corporations then they are doing their fucking job right.
The FBI has been busy in Ohio, they got him, another cincy councilmember before, and Toledo’s council got busted a year ago or so too.
Ohio recently had a re-do election because the courts kept on striking down republican voting districts.
It wasnt advertised till the day of the re-do so of course practically no one showed. Voting is a complete scam.
Corruption in Ohio's cities is nothing new. People just don't know about it because it's overshadowed by places like Chicago.
Cleveland has been particularly corrupt for ages, there's a reason it votes Democratic so consistently. There was actually a decent (I'd give it a B/B-) movie called KIll The Irishman regarding a rather famous period of time where there was a mob war going on in the 1960's, and yes, ethnic tension between the Irish and Italians fed into it. Every part of the government had ties to the mob, literally 100%. If you were in government, you got contacted by the mob. The cops in "The Flats" district not only demanded protection money from business owners, but also got put on the mob's payroll as well, collecting mob payoffs for them by the same business owners.
The cops were so fucking dirty that you had to bribe them personally, then bribe the mob, who were already paying them!
That doesn't look like a human face. Just a corporate one.
