The other day when I was at the grocery store checkout I noticed my cashier had had a lot of Flash gear on and I asked her about it and she went on about how much she loved the Flash and then I asked her if she ever read any of his comic books and she looked at me like I had said the most offensive thing and said no.
Obviously people are free to like what they like and you do need normies to make money. Normie isn't a bad thing as I am a normie in some areas (I mentioned before that I am working my out out of normie status with Anime/Manga). I guess my annoyance is that the people who act like experts about the MCU for instance are the same people who wouldn't have been caught dead reading a comic book or the same people who clap like seals with every "reimagined" butchering of source material. I don't know how many people I've seen in comments section saying that it doesn't matter that Halo/Wheel of Time/LOTR doesn't follow the lore.
I get that casual fans bring in money but in a perfect world shouldn't the people who are in charge of the IPs appreciate the more hardcore fans who actually read the source material. Like Amazon should've taken into account the people who actually read WOT before hiring a douchebag who didn't care or maybe Marvel shouldn't hire showrunners who openly admit to never reading comic books. I get if you have never been into them but if you get a job to direct a show based on a comic book character shouldn't you at least do some research?
As a life long Star Wars fan one of the worst examples is Disney erasing the EU. I get that they wanted to do their own thing but the least they could've done was continue making stories in that universe along with their own as a tip of the cap to the fans who kept Star Wars going by reading books/comics or playing the video games when there were no movies. Or maybe they could've done Clone Wars style animation of some of the better stories. It does make me chuckle to see how Disney will keep re-releasing the EU books because they make money.
Sorry for the long post, rant over.
There’s been a major push for what I like to call intellectual obsolescence. Something interesting and unique is created and in less that 5 years it has become a corrupted mess with no charm or appeal because it is just pandering in the original characters skinsuits. We saw this since the push around 2009. Marvel, GoT, Star Wars, ESPN, DC, Witcher, etc. it is easier to buy a franchise that is proven successful and make intellectual obsolescence to where they can mass produce crap and there’s a guaranteed fan base because everything is crap.
I guess that definitely explains the MCU. I remember marvel now comics didn’t sell but since they pushed the right messages of course Disney would adapt that. Or She-Hulk. Instead of adapting the successful John Byrne run they pander to this massive audience of comic book reading females they think are out there. Disney there are plenty of soaps and drama shows that women love. No need to buy the IP of male dominated hobbies
ESPN was/ is the worst offender in my opinion. They managed to make sports completely unappealing to men. Even UFC is now becoming WWF because of ESPN.
I used to watch a lot of espn shows til it became msnbc. I’ve been a WWF fan since I was little but am also a UFC fan. If womens spirts are good people will watch. You can’t force ppl to be interested
Which is why most female fights are the piss break usually. No one really cares about women fights which is why female “fighters” tend to have onlyfans.
Well I’m not ashamed to admit I enjoyed Paige Vanzant’s fights but mainly because she was hot
And now she makes more money selling nudes lol
I didn't know that.
It's the case that effort takes time and money so the West would rather take work that's already been done, wear it as a skinsuit than adapt by reading the materials and then move onto the next like locusts. Marvel got lucky in that it started with people that did read the source materials but too much diversity and now I doubt a lot of them read nowadays. And it's reflected in the casual audience than the hardcore as the hardcore just went back to the material they had and noped out of the new stuff.
I would also add there's a larger issue with the west in general with our fiction in that we stick with one character all the time and reluctant to explore the same concepts but with a different characters. Doctor Who actually managed to get around this for a long time but that got ruined think how many reboots of Marvel and DC we've gone through than completely new characters.
In regards to comic books there are a ton of characters that you could use. They always say that nobody is willing to give new characters a chance. The problem is that with these young woke writers their new character is simply an avatar of themselves whose goal is to push "the message". Like you said all my comic books now are from 2014 and prior and pretty much all the books I read unless I get a recommendation. I will support indie books where I seen them. Like I ordered Eric July's comic book and will buy Razorfists book.
I watched Dr. Who up until the female doctor's 2nd or 3rd episode. All they had to do was have a doctor go through time and space. Why they were so insistent on a female doctor instead of spinning off a female time lord is beyond me.
As I said, skinsuit but combined with self-insertion "why does the doctor have to be a man, why not a woman like me? And also represent my issues.." and that's how you kill a franchise.
I've not seen that much from Japan thankfully as we're getting a guy that has chainsaws come out of his body in October and a guy literally Reincarnated as a vending machine announced as an anime.
I'm sorry but if you have more people excited for guy reincarnates as a vending machine than Batgirl, please hand in you pen, pencils and sketchbook and apply to McDonald's for your career.
Mate, we begged for YEARS for a season 2! Thankfully we are getting sequels and conclusions more often now.
The only other one I can think of that is being meme'd about never getting a season 2 is No game no life
Then there's the ones that will never get a sequel (poors one out for High School of the Dead)
And the books are now completed after 21 volumes, meaning if they fuck with it, we'll know.
The Devil is a Part-Timer was fucking great.
What do you like reading? Shows?
Current stuff, finished Starship troopers, just started Atlas Shrugged, both books I finally started reading after putting it off too long
In terms of shows, mostly anime and YouTube, anime I'm really enjoying right now is Classroom of the Elite and Overlord with this weird new one Lycoris Recoil really intriguing me
Is there a free anime streaming service like crackle or Tubi? I recently saw Fist of the North Star on Tubi and loved it. I’m getting into more anime and this group has provided a ton of suggestions.
Heinlein is my favorite author. I think a faithful adaptation of Starship Troopers could work but I don’t trust todays screenwriters. I have Atlas Shrugged in my pile of books to read. I’m currently reading Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell.
The site Animedao seems good as they seem to have pretty much all of it there INCLUDING the uncensored stuff (so want to see why Re do of healer was the first time twitter shut up that's your site lol) just remember to put .to at the end
Lesser fans used to get bullied and hazed out of the group until they gained sufficient enough knowledge or skill to be acknowledged as an equal, or recognized they weren't welcome and left.
That should have never changed. Bring back bullying.
Now they write articles whining about gatekeeping. I can’t tell you how often my knowledge of Star Wars or comics was challenged
Let em write thier articles. I can still exclude them from my groups to the point where they are forced to make their own (or give up, the usual option).
If you aren't willing to put in the effort, you aren't welcome here.
Legalize fighting back instead.
Fuck around and find out.
Violence should always beget violence, and taking that away was one of the dumbest mistakes ever made.
In my school experience, the victim was always punished for fighting back, and the bully got off scot-free.
What kind of message does THAT send? "Don't fight tyrants, you'll never win."
Zero tolerance policies have always been retarded and abused. It is a necessary part of growing up and understanding boundaries for boys to become physical with each other. Both the bully and the bullied need that breaking point to properly define their understanding of what is and isn't allowed.
"Don't sink to their level" is fucking bullshit.
Tread on those who tread on you.
You can tell savaging these stories is the goal and not an unfortunate outcome of "reimagining for broad appeal" by comparing to the video game market.
Video game companies hopelessly chase whales to the exclusion of almost all else. In other media, die-hard fans are the 'whales': they may not drop $10k a year on your franchise, but they will buy everything you make (or would have ten years ago). The fact that no one is catering to the fan market is evidence that their goal is not to make money.
I mean, based on the things they are doing in comic books nowadays, you should be happy that at the very least the normies are just sticking to the mindless easy entertainment rather than funding the ideological dregs ;).
Good point. I remember seeing America Chavez, RIRi, and MS marvel collecting dust on shelves
I ran across a cashier the other day that had buttons from The Adventure Zone on her smock, and when I noted it (as I had listened to the full run of it years ago) she actually seemed well-versed in the show and its lore, so I was pleased to see that she wasn't one of those "casual fans".
That being said, I definitely get where you're coming from in that the newly-introduced "fans" can be frustrating, especially when they don't want to dive any deeper than a surface skim of the material. We, as the old guard fans, see the signs of fandom and we've been trained to expect that those "showing the colors" are as deep in the fandom as we are. We expect our adaptations of the material to be true to the source, we expect a certain level of knowledge from those who are the keepers of the lore, and when that's not there it drives us up the wall.
I feel like all we can really do is boycott it and move on to trying to create the next thing. Once there is no more profit left in the original product, the parasites will likely leave it, and maybe we can circle back to the original thing and revive it if we can.
just ditch the fluff and join ConPro
