It was just after he killed thousands of ethnically Russian civilians there (almost all of them pensioners), btw.
The Russians loved it so much they elected him president.
There are also actual religious sects literally worshipping him. He's on icons and all that.
It's Putin during his (safe) trip to Chechnya in March 2000. They had to him play a co-pilot for a show, not the last time.
