I have, but I don't necessarily agree that the Tories have no principles, because I would put that into the camp of Leftism itself. I don't think they are proper Leftists, but they are conserving Fabianism. Fabian Socialism has been the bedrock of Britain for at least 100 years now, even if the Brits don't quite get it. The damage runs very deep. He's witnessed shit that should explain it to him, given that the Post-War Consensus basically enshrined Socialism and the Conservatives accepted it, and that very initial proposals of the EU, and early criticisms thereof, showed that it would inevitably be a French-German project that would remove all sovereignty from Europe and unite it under Socialism.
He's still struggling to get past the fact that "propriety" isn't the advantage of the English, it's their fucking downfall. It's why the Americans had to revolt.
He made a comment in his book club video about: "The English: Are They Human" where he said the English couldn't commit an ethnic cleansing. He then corrected himself, and said it could be done if all propriety had been abandoned. But they have several times in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, North America, and elsewhere. He doesn't get that the murders were proper.
The English sense of smug superiority and unthinking acceptance of orderliness is exactly why they commit mass murder. The British Intellectual elite told the English that it was proper for the French Accadians to be forcibly removed and pushed on a ship into the ocean. It was proper that the Scots would be made civilized through direct mass murder, or by ensuring clanish violence benefited loyal groups. It was proper to recognize the Irish as a subhuman population and intentionally starve them into submission as a mechanism of control. It was proper to deny North American Colonists their English "ancient rights and liberties" because they lived outside of England and could no longer be considered English. It was proper to establish a military governor for Massachusetts, and send the largest naval force in British history to New York harbor because the Parliament was absolutely sovereign, and no dissent could be tolerated. And has he forgot to notice: it was proper for the British troops to machine gun Indians to death for gathering because it was past their curfew, and the Indians were less than human and needed to learn a lesson through violence.
Now he's living through the problems the common-wealth always had, but in a modern twist. England's proper place is as a subordinate to the EU. It is proper to state your pronouns. It is proper not to bring up the rape gangs. It is proper to welcome refugees. It is proper to put up a pride flag.
The Socialists have been defining what is proper for a century, and I'm afraid that propriety isn't going to do anyone any favors. Everyone needs to have a crazy little American in them to take the risk to break the long-held institutions and traditions that might have actually gotten us in this mess.
