This isn't about harming Russia, Russia is just a means to an end. Part of this is about harming Russia's oil and gas execs who are trying to cut off the dem's embezzlement scheme. Part is distracting the world from how bad they are getting fucked by the elite. Part is controlling americans like good little sheep. There's several more reasons, but those are the biggest. They are petty and short-sighted, they do not believe they will face any backlash or long-term harms for their actions because america is powerful and they never have suffered the consequences of their actions.
