The use of "lede" rather than "lead" is a relatively recent (1980s) invention not rooted in historical usage, and since it strikes me as journalistic elitism, I prefer not to use it.
Well, I'm glad you were that guy. I'm usually up on many of these things, but I'd always thought it was 'bury the lead' too.
It is lead. Lede is the neurotic form for people with OCD, usually zoomers who freak out when you type noone instead of no one while both are correct, but the former is historically acceptable.
