And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I never used any built in voice chat feature of a game. I always used third party ones, like Ventrillio, TeamSpeak, or Mumble.
I'm old enough to remember when Valve games didn't have voice chat, and one of those 3 were the only option you had. Well, Roger Wilco, too, but that has been dead long enough that its corpse can buy beer. :p
I much prefer Mumble these days, as mumble is open source, anyone can run a server, and there are no limits on how many people can simultaneously connect.
It helps that built in voice chats are almost always god awful. Whether the quality, connection, or just the people, there exists no good reason to participate in them.

Best thing about Mumble is you can set up a server on a SBC and never have to worry about it.

Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
Wanna fall asleep on the porch in rocking chairs later?
Heh, remember the days of ass holes playing music through valve voice chat?
Nothing like trying to play 2fort in TFC while someone is blasting Rick Astley in your ear... :)
What's voice chat? Can you not type?
You realize that typing means I have to stop doing anything in game, right?
