I have HBO Max because when it first started I thought HBO was top notch in entertainment and thought it would be that way going forward. I no longer have such illusions. I will say they have a good back catalog and once I watch the older shows and movies I'll cancel since every new show is pretty much what you would expect in our current time.
I am currently watching Batman Beyond and I haven't seen it all the way through but was able to catch an episode here and there when it first came out. Cyberguy64 mentioned on one of my previous posts that Batman Beyond is a great example of introducing a new character while respecting the character from the past.
I'll never understand how companies like Disney can be so clueless as to why there was backlash to Last Jedi. They could've made even more money by respecting Luke while also making Rey the main character (with good writing of course). I also think a better job could've been done with Finn, but I lost sympathy for him once he started joining in the "I am so oppressed" crowd during the summer of love. Another recent example is the Wheel of Time. I have seen book readers getting attacked for criticizing the show. If that moron showrunner wants to write his own show, then he should write his own show.
But I am really enjoying Batman Beyond. I almost forgot what it looked like to respect a character from the past while building up the current lead.
Batman beyond was what continuations were meant to be. The best part of that series in my opinion was how they futurized the American gothic of Batman.
BB was based off of comics done in the era when that meant something.
Also helps that it was crated during a time when adaptions were meant to faithfully recreate a story in a different medium rather than subvert, demoralise, and push "the message".
Static Shock was released at the same time, and had some cross-over episodes. An original black super hero that didn't slam the audience.
ironically, the creator of that hero was against black superheros riding skateboards, and getting balanced out by a hwite chick, and railed against heros like dwayne taylor while he was at MArvel.
Yeah the creator is a black supremacist shithead.
With a white best friend who didn't have to be jive, a rich honkey, or a complete "YEAH!" loser. I loved the first season, missed the second.
True. My many long boxes of comic books can attest to that.
Batman Beyond had some fucking child scarring episodes. Sinking to the center of the Earth and having to just.... exist there until you starved to death. And that other one where some dude was trapped in some underground cave and made to live forever from some magic radioactive goo.... The Joker episode was kind of a let down though. Pretty anticlimactic and the logic of how he came back was pretty dumb.
The Joker bit was a movie not an episode.
Really? I could have sworn... Hm. Well, Still wasn't too impressed.
Google return of joker.
True. A reformed stormtrooper with possible powers sounds like an interesting start to a good story.
Finn hardly, hardly is a storm trooper. He has no training, no experience, he wore the helmet once ever and after that its o ly ever mentioned as "yeah I cleaned the toilets here too" he's about as much of a stormtrooper as the guy who drives the refueling truck is a fighter ace. I wish they had made him actually have some experience before he flipped.
That’s a valid point. And then they seemed to hint at him knowing the force but left it there
The Finn actor has a legitimate gripe that the movies 100% cucked the shit out of Finn. Every trailer set him up as the main character, the first thing anyone saw of the series was him on a desert planet in storm trooper garb, he has the jacket, he drives the plot in the first movie, and the hook to bring people in was him lighting up the blue sabre on that cold snowy forest with Ren in the foreground.
And then he's a cuck for the entire trilogy, constant "stop holding my hand" "I was a janitor here" the entire casino planet and his aborted suicide run, various "I want to tell you something-", nothing. With how often the series emasculated him I'm shocked that he wasn't a White guy, but then again there aren't any White men allowed on the hero side anymore, writers anticipated different actors with how Finn and Poe were portrayed as bumbling idiots.
Completely agree. He has a legit gripe
finn was lame off the bat, we already have reformed imperials, in both EU and the original series.
The pile of useless copy pasted characters in disneywars:
finn (copy pasted defector)
phasmuh (copy pasted fett, less interesting backstory and autonomy)
the protagonist of BFront II (another copy pasta defector, spoilers, this time a wamenz of color tho)
the little red chick, whos a copy pasta animatronic and looks just like the most powerful jedi in OT
holdoodoo (copy pasted leia, but no charisma, and a retired teacher look)
Stable boys who are attuned to the force
and rose, whos a copy paste of jar jar, but with a forced romance added in where she gets to make out with finn even tho he just met her lo
That’s true. As a life long EU fan I agree. I was just saying his story could’ve been better but that applies to the sequels as a whole. Also I find it odd how Disney got rid of the EU only to use certain ideas. If they didn’t want it then they should’ve made something original
Not to mention literally copying Jan Ors for R1, changing some vowels around in her name and deleting my boy Katarn.
Although I haven't gotten to it yet as I'm still watching the original series, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam does something similar: treating the old protagonist with respect whilst making Kamille the new hero.
I need to check it out. What are you watching it on?
Unofficial services, originally Kissanime, but now 9Anime.
DO WHAT YOU WANT CUZ A PIRATE LIVES FREE~
Also, if you've never seen Mobile Suit Gundam, DO IT. It's a genuinely timeless series, even with its dated animation. I've also seen the OVA Gundam Thunderbolt S1 aka. December Sky, and it's also highly recommended if you want to get into this franchise. Plus, since most of the EN audio tracks for each were recorded in the 2000s - mid 2010s, watching these older shows with their EN audio tracks is actually for the most part (barring AGE) a good alternative to the JP audio, ESPECIALLY Mobile Suit Gundam which features a remastered, boosted sound mix. But you can feel free to watch it with JP audio if you want. Both voice casts are great.
There are a few things on HBO Max worth checking out. The various Batman animated works are among them. Gotham by Gaslight is one of my favorites. Outside of that, I only bothered with The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, The Wire, and True Detective.
Those are good shows. Also need to go through those animated movies.
Batman Beyond was great. It was a passing of the torch, while still making sure the original wasn't belittled or stunted in some way to prop up the new one. And it also has a pretty nifty end zone style dance in the intro.
