Margaret Atwood's always been postfeminist trash. Handmaid's Tale is not a very well-written nook and if it weren't for liberal dyke feminist professors forcing it onto students for 25 years, it would have been a minor feminist classic at best in the vein of Kathy Acker and Muriel Sparks' work.
The original NYT review from 1986 really highlights how ridiculous it is for Atwood to place the story in the US, since nothing in our modern society (especially the 80s!) suggested "Theocracy."
Atwood is hack. Reminds me of the old GWB days where every lame liberal in college would just mindlessly call him Hitler for no reason other than that's what their professors told them he was.
I was forced to read Cat's Eye in college. It sucked. All her books are feminist polemics and therefore boring as shit and annoying to anyone but a blue-haired man-hater.
