What's more annoying?

Arguing with an idiot or arguing with a genuinely smart person who's too stubborn to admit they're wrong and too lazy to look at the facts when they're shoved under their nose?

The genuinely smart person.

The more I debated with them the more familiar I became with their argumentative tactics. At the outset they counted upon the stupidity of their opponents, but when they got so entangled that they could not find a way out they played the trick of acting as innocent simpletons. Should they fail, in spite of their tricks of logic, they acted as if they could not understand the counter arguments and bolted away to another field of discussion. They would lay down truisms and platitudes; and, if you accepted these, then they were applied to other problems and matters of an essentially different nature from the original theme. If you faced them with this point they would escape again, and you could not bring them to make any precise statement. Whenever one tried to get a firm grip on any of these apostles one's hand grasped only jelly and slime which slipped through the fingers and combined again into a solid mass a moment afterwards. If your adversary felt forced to give in to your argument, on account of the observers present, and if you then thought that at last you had gained ground, a surprise was in store for you on the following day. [He] would be utterly oblivious to what had happened the day before, and he would start once again by repeating his former absurdities, as if nothing had happened. Should you become indignant and remind him of yesterday's defeat, he pretended astonishment and could not remember anything, except that on the previous day he had proved that his statements were correct. Sometimes I was dumbfounded. I do not know what amazed me the more--the abundance of their verbiage or the artful way in which they dressed up their falsehoods. I gradually came to hate them.

My life improved drastically when I realized that almost all people argue not because they want to put their theories to the test, but because they get a dopamine fix out of getting angry. They'll do anything to keep the argument going even if it means making absolute fools of themselves.

Now I simply refuse to argue with anyone about anything unless I have a very good reason to believe it's going to be constructive. Combative or contrarian behavior is an instant disengage. Sometimes I'll drop out of a conversation so suddenly and seamlessly that the other person gets so confused they can't even continue arguing.

The most annoying to argue with is the subset of idiot that is the progressive with no understanding of the argument you're making or even the argument that they are making while being incredibly smug about it.

I would much rather argue with someone about whether clouds are a negative or a positive feedback than someone who doesn't know why the fuck clouds matter but knows they are right because they agree with Bill Nye.

When you make a compelling argument to a smart person, at least you know that even if they don't relent to reality that they're internally tortured by it.

Winning an argument with a smart person is hard, winning an argument with a stupid person is damn near impossible.

This is true... Think Twain wrote about this in "king arthur's court." Great book. Better than Sawyer or Finn. Nobody ever reads it...

I prefer arguing with a smart person, even if they seem stubborn there is a high chance they are going to look this stuff up later and there is a good chance they at the very least take in to the account the other side of the argument.

I find it more annoying that I stovepipe or a dud when talking time is over.

I'd say arguing with an expert in a field that has nothing to do with the subject. Especially when they don't acknowledge or try to study the new field.
