I think it isn't (or isn't just) that; it fucks the immune system up in general.

aids is effectively caused by an exhausted immune system that is to tired to and defeated to defend itself.

I agree, but that's a harder case to make and requires more data. It's simpler and more provable that it screws up your immune response to this specific (mostly harmless) virus.
