I thought it started because they wanted to virtue signal about not using "guys" to refer to a group of mixed of unknown genders.

"Guys" is heteronormativeciswhitepatriarchytriggering, so use gender-neutral terms like "everyone/everybody", "y'all", or "people"

They're lazy fucks and y'all is the shortest to type out. Then again, they use "sweety" when they want to condescend to someone, so maybe they do just have a fetish for southern/black people talk.
