we're talking about a very modest number of people seeking protection from various forms of harm inflicted by institutions and individuals who belong to vastly larger groups.

Every word a lefty says is a lie. They use the same words we do but they mean something different and usually contrary to the correct meaning.

Translation from marxist:

"protection" means special privileges or exemption from laws and rules

"harm" means valid criticism, enforcement of laws and rules

"institutions and individuals" means anyone and anything that doesnt push the marxist agenda
