They're stupid, but I don't think they're that stupid. The military industrial complex didn't learn to stay out of stupid wars from the Vietnam fiasco but it did learn not to conscript people into stupid wars. The reason we have a problem with forever wars is because people can vote for retards who get us into these wars without putting their own ass on the line. Besides, the officer class has its own self interest to think about. They're the ones who get their asses blown up when a pissed off conscript decides to frag his superiors.
It's not very common these days because because there's no draft. Everyone in the military is there because they voluntarily enlisted, so soldiers killing their COs because they don't want to be there isn't much of a problem for the military. The officer class would like to keep it that way, which is why they oppose the draft. It was an issue in Vietnam because there were people there against their will fighting a war they didn't agree with. It generally happened for one of two reasons: 1) The solider was out of fucks to give and turned on his CO or 2) to save himself from a high risk stunt Captain Dumbass was about to pull to make a name for himself.

How frequently does this even happen? The last incident of friendly fire I heard about was the murder of Pat Tillman.
