Not so an assassination - that would just make them martyrs and lead someone just as bad, if not worse, to take their place.

Now, speaking hypothetically, if you have the support of the vast majority of people - that strategy might even work. But it will not work when you follow a minority position, unless the individual in question is highly competent or important to the regime. A Stolypin or a Hitler, which is not the case here.
