I'm black and I'm am sick of over representation/diversity for the sake of it. When I first started hearing this push for diversity, I thought they meant hiring the best person available, but it is clear that it means less or no white people. I live in a majority white country, so there is no reason to whine if I see white people in entertainment. That should be pretty clear cut.
Also, another problem is that it has reached a point where I am hesitant to watch anything with a female, black, or hispanic cast made in the last few years because most likely it will be yet another feminist lecture, lecture about race, or an immigration lecture where there is only one point of view.
Add in the fact that they constantly push these movies or tv shows and we are supposed to love every lazy reboot.
One of the reasons I pretty much don't watch or read anything past 2014.
Honestly I think a female or minority author/director who cared about writing good stories would have a very hard time in Hollywood if they didn't push the usual left wing talking points.
Look how Jordan Peele, Ava Duvernay, etc. are treated as if they are Hitchcock on steroids.
A part of it is self-fulfilling prophecy. Not how it started, but eventually they added so much social justice worrier crap that they lost normal people, so now most of the people on netflix and that watch sitcoms are SJWs so if they don't make it over the top they'll lose their remaining audience.
Nobody that canceled Netflix because of "Cuties" or whatever else is coming back ever. Basically real-life bridge burning.
Cuties was the last straw for me with Netflix. When I cancelled I mentioned how they couldn’t shut up about race narratives.
What makes no sense is that as someone who go grew up in 80s/90s I remember shows like Cosby Show, Family Matters, and Fresh Prince that everyone enjoyed. Just like you said now a show with a largely black cast will be sjw nonsense.
I grew up in the 90s too. Loved Fresh Prince and Family Matters. Carlton, his dad, and Will Smith were amazing characters.
I can’t watch anything with black people in it now because it will inevitably be preachy. The “minority” has to either be perfect, or a victim. What about a flawed human you can actually relate to? Only the rare good shows, usually with an all or mostly white cast, still do it.
The last thing I saw with black people in it that had any real depth was Firefly. I gave up and don’t watch TV anymore though.
You know, I never drew a hard line over any of the streaming platforms -- but I did naturally drift away from Netflix probably over the past 2 years. Yes, their politics suck. But so does their entire platform lmao their content has become garbage and the actual app itself blows. Who was the fucking brainiac that decided "let's make every title auto play a preview that you can't turn off without visiting the website" and also made it so that it's pretty much impossible to only view selections that are in your spoken language.
But God there sure is a lot of the trash you're mentioning also. It doesn't even offend me though honestly- it's so transparent that I can't help but laugh at this point.
Psychology research shows that all social groups tend to become more extreme over time.
Then there are factors working against this natural impulse. In 80s/90s TV there was a limited marketplace; you've got like three stations and as much as the people running them wanted to put on more extreme content their reality was they had to get views and bring in the money. Also red lines like "Cuties" where as the group gets more extreme it loses some members and gets smaller.
So today you have fewer forces pulling people to the cohesive center. You can run a streaming service only for SJWs or Furries or Anime and not go out of business. Or reddit where the hive-mind gets the top spot and the 49% views are hidden at the bottom or censored.
...doesn't bode well unless we can figure out how to add back in some commonality.
Psychology research shows that all social groups tend to become more extreme over time.
Which is why diversity doesn't work unless you have some some kind of strong uniting civil society forced on everyone from childhood, or one group is is culturally dominant - supreme, if you will.
I get tired of this, because every single time they add someone from a "minority" they make the character unbearable and unlikeable. I start rooting against them.
I'm even more on the fact, if the movie or series they are making comes from somewhere else, like a book, comic, game or something, they should cast the character that best represents it. But they prefer to grab something, race and gender swap instead of creating something with the characters already created that represents the people they want.
Heck, why can't they use the example of Spartan? They needed diversity on Arrow. So they created a very good character that didn't exist in the comic. He grew up as a character, had flaws, battled against it, and more. And he quickly became my favorite character. I know, CW of all things. But I guess their creativity went all on the creation of Spartan, and now they are a mess! heh!
Instead of BATWAHMXN, they could have made SPARTAN tv show... But nah!
Exactly. Race/gender swaps are so lazy. Also there are characters in comic books that aren’t used. And a main annoyance I think is the constant push that we have to love it.
Well I can’t disagree but there is some laziness. Take the upcoming Wheel of Time show. In that larger world there are people of other races, however they are being lazy too by race swapping the main characters. The main subversion is stating the main character is someone who it is not.
Eric July had a video on how much this irritates him, especially when they race swap a popular white comic book character while ignoring dozens of existing black characters who sit on the shelf and never get a shot.
Absolutely. I’m a big fan of his. Discovered him through geeks and gamers and nerdrotic. It’s also funny how with every race and gender swap they pay themselves on the back like it’s some major accomplishment
I loved Diggle too. It really comes down to good actors and good writing. Granted CW stuff’s cheesy, but it’s cheesy in an enjoyable way. Plenty of great black actors in things, like Idris Elba and Denzel’s son. I haven’t seen their full catalog or anything, but I can’t recall either of them being in anything that was about them being black.
I don’t watch much of anything, but if movies or shows look like they’re about the race or genders or sexual preferences of the characters, it’s a good filtering mechanism to know it’s going to suck. In part because with the current SJW belief system, they can’t give characters any flaws or be critical of their culture in the process, which would be the fucking point of a narrative work.
We don’t exactly need more things about gay people, but as an example, if they made something about gay people that hated the current alphabet movement and they called each other fags and joked around about things, went into being gay maybe not at all defining them, questioning whether or not they would want to marry a woman to have kids because maybe they still wanted that despite loving cock, or went into how many if not most gay people have some fucked up childhood experiences that amount to molestation or rape, it would at least be interesting. Maybe go into how some people probably aren’t gay but just want attention. All kinds of things that could be interesting if well written that would be about gay people. But they never do that and can’t because it’d present gay people as flawed. They always present gay people as these super human Gary Sue’s that just want to suck dick in peace but everyone’s giving them shit about it. In real life nobody gives a fuck. It’s not enough to make for the basis of being a character in a story.
Any narrative work that presents all characters as flawless isn’t a narrative work in any deep sense.

The real white privilege is not being pandered to at all times lol
Ha! Good point

Not even old stuff? What are you reading?

Must be the same blue-hair who made YouTube's app.

Race and gender swaps aren’t lazy. They are malicious. They are deliberate subversion. They are an attack.
Well I can’t disagree but there is some laziness. Take the upcoming Wheel of Time show. In that larger world there are people of other races, however they are being lazy too by race swapping the main characters. The main subversion is stating the main character is someone who it is not.

Absolutely correct! Make the character grow! It is fine for the character to be good at something. But at EVERYTHING?!
Fuck the maREY Sues!
Totally understand
