The fact that Ditko's heirs are fighting for this just shows how insane copyright law has become.
The entire point of copyright law is to protect authors from publishing houses so that successful authors are encouraged to produce more works.
Neither of the parties in this case are the original creator so there's no reason for either of them to hold copyrights. Only one of them is even considering making new content and, I would argue, Marvel is far more concerned with injecting IDPOL into existing properties and cashing in than creating new works or even maintaining the original works.
Fuck em both.
I don't think IP should be an asset that you can sell. License it out while you're alive, make a lot of money, give your fortune to your kids through inheritance. That's it.
Under these rules...
Disney: oh gee, I wish we were the ones making millions off of star wars.
News: George Lucas dies of unexpected illness
Disney: IT'S FREE REALESTATE!
Hitman: pleasure doing business
Good. I hope all the rights holders do this to rid us of Wokeish Marvel.
It's time for new OC.
I wish them bon chance in their endeavor, but they're not just going up against the tyranny that was Marvel's work-for-hire contracts back in the day. They're now facing the wrath of the fully functional battle station that is The Lawyers Of Disney. Even if Disney has to bite the bullet and terminate the copyright on those properties, it'll be less than a month before they come up with new costumes and new "legally distinct" iterations of "Professor Weird" and "The Arachnid".
It would only be over the Peter Parker character. That would just give Marvel an excuse to make Miles Morales the permanent replacement, with the name Spiderman instead of Spider-Man. Problem solved for them.
Fun fact: If Disney hadn't lobbied for copyright law extensions, Spider-Man would have become public domain last year and Ditko's estate would have no case.
I'll celebrate if it happens. Although Spider-Man I guess is not that bad.
Not that bad?
“In this issue of The Amazing Glacial Spider-Man: Spidey crosses the street! With THREE flashbacks to his origin story!”
Ditko? Is that like Bizarro World Mike Ditka?
