Almost every democrat I know falls into one of four categories:
The complacent lifer. They were democrats back when the democrats weren't quite as evil as they are today, they've been democrats for decades, and they're not changing now. It's like people who smoke just because it's all they know. They don't even enjoy it any more and they're aware it's killing them but they're either too afraid or too apathetic to stop.
The retarded communist. Young, extremely low IQ, legitimately believes that once capitalism is abolished we'll all be living in space stations collecting unlimited money and not working. They have no actual political views, or thoughts at all, beyond "give me money". They spout dogma and worship the narrative, but only because it's trendy. This is the type AOC appeals to.
The coward. They see the violence coming from the left and they're willing to do anything to make themselves not a target. The wave BLM flags to prevent BLM from killing them. They wave pride flags to prevent the rainbow mafia from destroying their lives. They put signs in their yard to let the mob know that they're on their side. Every political stance they take is based entirely on self-preservation, nothing more.
The genocidal racist. They hate white people and want them dead. Nothing more.
I don't consider "me like mainstream politician :]" flags to be the same phenomenon. That's just human nature. They want to belong to a "team". To those people it's really no different from cheering for a sports team.
Also, there hasn't really been a right wing version of BLM or antifa in a very long time. Probably a solid 50 years, minimum. But yes, when the KKK was still active, people who had "I love the KKK" signs in their yard would have absolutely qualified as this type of person.

Devil’s advocate here: I still see “Trump 2020” flags and signs in yards everywhere I go. This is also virtue signaling.
Letting people know who you're voting for is not a virtue signal. He's talking about those "in this house we believe etc" signs.
Unless they have a time machine, having “Trump 2020” merch publicly visible in September of 2021 is absolutely, positively, virtue signaling.
