I'd suggest that the reason is actually pretty simple: insecurity.

For some reason, people have become deathly afraid of being wrong about things. Many will adamantly stand by their position, regardless of if its been proven not to be the case, because their egos forbid them from considering they may have been incorrect.
I don't think there's been better examples of this than during the Trump Presidency and the election preceding it. Just think of how many explicit lies were promulgated throughout the MSM and social media during those 5 years. There are genuinely still people who believe the fact that "Trump never denounced white surpremacy," even though there are 8+ minute long clips of him doing just that over the course of several years. When people are confronted with that clip, I've seen them say "Yeah, but he didn't mean it" or some other such excuse. Which is absolute insanity.
Of course, I don't believe it's as simple as just insecurity alone; just the primary contributor. There's also a touch of ideological obsession that borders on fanaticism or zealotry, which I feel can likely be attributed to an excess of consumerism. Intellectual laziness has rendered many people into mindless drones who simply repeat whatever their favorite celebrity, influencer, or media personality, tells them is the truth.
It would definitely make an interesting study; however, I don't think anyone with real credibility would be willing to stand up against an establishment that tries to ruin people who pull back the curtain.
