They have been doing this for months. Never had a twitter but noticed a few months ago that I could no longer browse comments on posts unless the comment was one of the first displayed.
Twitter is like the desperate NYT, trying to put u a pay/join wall like I actually GIVE A FUCK.
This just started happening to me a day or 2 ago. Tried using Adblock but then you can't scroll down the page.
I'd love to login but Jack has shut down my accounts and makes me enter a ph # when I try to create a new one.
They're really trying to lock down the narrative. Sheep on twitter dont go anywhere for any real information, they like being spoon fed information by degenerate "celebrities".
You can add the rule twitter.com##body:style(overflow-y: auto !important;) to make scrolling work again.
Found out you can just block cookies for Twitter.com and that works.
If you browse in incognito the pop up doesn't show up.
Thanks to u/sneedger found out why- incognito blocks cookies.
I've added Twatter to "Sites that can never use cookies" and it works properly now.

Something went wrong with my account and it's stuck in an endless 'reset your password' limbo for years. Every time I browse twitter now I have to do it in incognito mode, because of how aggressively twitter attempts to auto-login in spite of me not wanting it to.
I hate this shit. I hate when websites try to get me to use an app to browse them on my phone, too.
See that 'Sign up with Google' button? DON'T FUCKING CLICK IT. Don't log in with _____, don't authorize ________ app.

Don't really use Twitter but I was having issues with archive.org and wanted to see if there's a problem.
When I tried to do a search or view a tweet other than the landing page, they now show you this modal. And if you click the X or anywhere other than the modal, it takes you back to the previous page. You can easily get around this by going directly to the page.
Seems pretty desperate.

My problem with Nitter is the constant domain fishing. Needing to look up the domain list because the easy-to-memorize ones are failing is real shitty.

Just block it with ublock origin if you really want to use it.
Their modal dialog also removes the ability of the background to scroll, so even if you block it you can't view the content beyond the screen viewport.

they also broke it for old computers. it used to give you a basic version if you had an old pc that couldn't run twitter, now it just won't load.
That prevents you from scrolling down, blocking cookies works.
And the number of direct twitter links in threads will remain as high as ever. I'm grateful that discord crap can't be linked in the same way.
It doesn't help that the .win platform encourages it by embedding tweets in posts and having them as one of the five available tags. I don't get why they didn't at least remove those features after Twitter banned Trump, let alone require archiving.
Because it needs to be said several times: The solution to this problem is to delete all cookies in your browser from twatter, and then ban all cookies from the twatter website.
Use search engines to look up the process for your respective browsers.
