More than half of the Afghan population is illiterate.
If you've ever seen those videos of them firing full auto without even aiming down the sights, standing in the middle of a street with no cover, it's because they literally believe God will be guiding the bullets.
I remember reading the words of a British muslim who went there to join one terrorist group or another, who slowly realized he was surrounded by total morons when he kept encountering people who counted on their fingers.
It's no surprise that some of them think they can just cling to the side of a plane and fly to America.
No, they don't. And the Afghans were notorious for their excellent marksmanship when fighting the Brits. I blame the introduction of AK and other automatics, replacing the Lee-Enfields and even older (and self made) guns they have had.
Also more recently they Taliban in particular got famous in the combat-footage community with their impressive sharpshooter work using thermal scopes on the M16s. Many a turkey shooting of the gov troops (single shots of course). 2 guys with the thermals were even in their video where a dozen of so proclaim the Islamic State in the presidential office.
'they' do - and by 'they', I mean specifically the morons I spoke of, not the ones actually smart enough to aim.
It was smoothbore vs rifled. Simple as that.
