I think there are a few reasons.
If they suddenly banned large popular subs like that, the users would rightfully turn their anger on those responsible. By instead killing it slowly they lessen the blowback.
Keeping the sub around for a while rather than suddenly banning it entirely helps keep users from galvanizing around an alternative service. If they had just up and banned r/MGTOW there might already be a .win.
They get off on rules lawyering just like people on Wikipedia. It's not enough to just ban people; they need their kangaroo court in which to find you guilty.
My and my buds assumed MGTOW was part of their commie agenda since MGTOW is not for the nuclear family per se. We live MGTOW lives but always scratched our heads while it was left up. Glad to see it no longer has reddit stamp of approval.
