Their problem with empathy is how the one and only response allowed is pity, coddling, etc. Sometimes the best response when someone has put themselves in a shitty situation is to encourage them to dig their own way out of it despite the fact that it's a hard and brutal path. That's still empathy, or at least it used to be before this "weaponization" took hold.
