What interests me is why anyone ever cares about the suicide rate in Japan. The suicide rate is higher in the US, Russia, India, Finland and Sweden but we only ever look at Japan.
Westerners only get their asian news from sensationalist sites. I would classify almost every news site that reports asian news in English as sensationalist. If it doesn't break headlines or play into stereotypes, it doesn't get reports. In fairness, the opposite probably exists in Asia as well.
They have a unique culture born of their past isolationism and current extreme collectivism that makes them interesting to look at in lots of ways.
Its kinda like studying Latin or having collections of animal facts. Pretty useless to any broader part of your life, but interesting as hell to jump into.
