Like Carl Sagan before him, he is a populariser. He is not at the cutting edge of his field, and his work is primarily in communicating scientific jargon to the layman.
It's actually really, really rare that top scientific and mathematical minds are good communicators themselves. They're generally turboautists who're literally incapable of thinking like the layman thinks - hardly surprising when you consider that the layman's IQ is closer to that of someone with downs syndrome than it is to that of these actual, unironic galaxy brains.
Are you good at explaining complex things to people with Downs Syndrome? No, you probably aren't.
That's what it's like a CERN physicist trying to explain their latest quantum particle discoveries to the world.
They have to go through an intermediary; someone 25 iq points dumber than them, but 25 iq points smarter than you.
I disagree with this. IQ thresholds exist.
On average, blacks have lower IQs than whites, and whites have lower IQs than Asians. But the difference between black societies and white societies is far greater than the difference between white societies and Asian societies. Because whatever IQ threshold is required for prosperous and functional society, whites obviously meet that threshold.
It's the same thing with understanding difficult and complex information. For example, a median IQ person crosses the threshold of literacy. That's a gigantic hurdle for a lower IQ person, functionally limiting their understanding in ways that are almost immeasurable.
