The scientific method involves testing AND RE-TESTING hypotheses, over and over again, even if it seems like "settled" science, because there is no discovery, rule, law, or theory that is sacrosanct or untouchable in science. Without being willing to look back over what was "settled" science and make controversial findings about it, we would still believe the Earth was flat and the sun somehow revolved around it.
