Well with things going crazy the past couple of days tech-wise, does anyone have any good suggestions for apps or platforms for chatting with friends that won't ban users for no no words and unsafe politics?

Telegram and element/matrix seem like your best options. If you use the encryption on those you should be fine.
Just want to reiterate that Telegram is encrypted and owned by Russians, so not likely to get subpoenaed by US authorities. This also means that certain groups like furries and pedos use it because only people that have joined the server can leak it.
It seems like you need a phone number to use Telegram, which could be a deal breaker for some people. And I believe Element/Matrix can ban you based on your user name, but they still can't see any of your encrypted messages.

For texting, I use Signal. I have group chats that auto-delete for everybody within 24 hours, and are end-to-end encrypted provided everyone in the chat is using Signal (you'll know if they're not). We can actually speak freely. It's liberating. But if you can't get your friends all on the same platform, then forget it.
Protonmail for email. I pay for it. Doesn't mean your info isn't being scooped up once you contact someone on Gmail though, so once again, you need both parties on the same platform.
If you're on Android you should probably install a keyboard that doesn't require internet access.
