I think the hyperempathy has another level of it.
They are told to feel super much about The Society and The World and such, while they can't function properly on a small scale. They have panic attacks about The Oppression of The World and Global Warming, while they can't be arsed to treat their immediate family and members of their community nicely or to practice little, logical things that would keep their environment a bit nicer.
Oh, they went to an Extinction Rebellion protest, but cooking at home and not buying shit premade and prepackaged, imported from exotic places is too much. They care about healthcare for the whole world, but they "don't have the spoons" to maybe walk a bit more, lose some weight and drink enough water.

Being hyper concerned about Orange/White Man Bad and global warming is a way of avoiding personal responsibilities and failures.
They also cling to all their self diagnosed ailments as a shield against having to take responsibility for their own failures in life.
