Where was the meme that went "Man I didn't expect that the left would get NASCAR and the right would get Harry Potter in the divorce settlement"
Harry Potter has always been more right-wing. The students are armed and form a militia in response to the government nationalizing the school.
OotP has a strong libertarian bent no matter how some might pretend there isn't. You've got the equivalent of mass media being shit and in bed with the government, and the government getting very hands-on about educational reform.
Which always struck me how odd it was that lefties attached themselves to the series. Then again, the last two books weren't as good as the first five when the fandom was at its peak size. Also every movie after 3 was trash, which were released during the time the fandom peaked, funny that.
OotP is widely regarded as the worst book. I used to think that was because it meandered and could have easily been cut down by like 150 pages. Now I wonder if it's because of politics.
But then again, the other books in the series also espouse personal responsibility, arming oneself for self defense, forming a militia against a corrupt government. Hmmmm
Harry and friends fight the media with the wizarding equivalent of Alex Jones.
It had no chance.
Not to mention the whole House Elf arc, which was conveniently cut out of the movies.
Happy slaves? Moreso than what's in Song of the South, that's for sure (those are sharecroppers. Who are basically self-employed, contract workers. Shit, the local Hutterites are more than happy to sharecrop your land.)
Sharecropping can be good in theory but in reality it was indentured servitude
