Happy birthday Mario fweep! What do we have planned for your 35th anniversary? Pure fucking cringe, of course:
-
A NES on a chip crammed into a Game and Watch shell. We're getting into the handheld Famiclone marker 5 years after Chinese bootleggers! Here, enjoy two whole games and a watch. Get it before the scalpers do!
-
An RC car with a camera. It's not like you can buy similar kits off Amazon, and get a toy that can actually fly, buy a glorified McDonalds figure with subpar gameplay.
-
New All Stars! Does that mean we get graphical updates to classic 3d mario games? Nope, enjoy Mario 64 in all its low poly glory stretched across huge modern TV screens! Remastering one of the best selling games would mean we actually give a shit about the quality of our products!
-
Tetris 99 but it's original SMB. Are you sick of this classic yet? Enjoy being creamed by sweaty neckbeards who've played this game since the original release.
-
A port of the game that is barely 10 years old. So how are we going to implement Wii U pad gameplay features when the touchscreen is docked in the cradle? Crickets Also, a B side game with no gameplay shots.
Mel Brooks jazz hands MOICHANDIZING!!!!
Get your Super Mario branded sneakers, sweats, Air Fresheners, Tanuki tail buttplugs, anything but actual fucking games. Cue the chorus of "akshually, the're a toy company, always have been gunshot"
Eeeurgh.
Yeah, as much as I like them, Nintendo is getting really lazy. The beginning of the Switch's life style was pretty good, but it fell off hard, just because Nintendo's exclusives have been pretty shit. If I want to play Indie games, I can do it on PC, and the Mario anniversary is worse than the past ones they have done. It is nice to see a port of Sunshine, but of course they made it limited run. I'm not looking forward to the next LoZ anniversary because they will probably pull the same shit.
Yeah, Nintendo went from consoles that had strong first party titles and middling third party titles to coasting on old fame and porting any old 99 cent mobile garbage. My Switch is basically a 300$ indie machine, which suits me because I like portable systems and big libraries.
I think the problem is that old franchises have become ossified to the point that any innovations in gameplay is seen as being "off brand". 2d Mario games have relied on SMB3's visual style for almost 20 years now, and the latest 3D game leans on gameplay mechanics established in Mario 64. A little bit of playing around with mascot characters is in order. For example, see Cadence of Hyrule, a third party licenced game with LoZ characters that manages to be innovative, charming, and in accordance with the spirit of the Zelda franchise. Imagine doing that with Mario, instead of this stale shit.
The Shovel Knight we need
the best part is games being limited time and limited contigent.
also them never having their games that are only ports anyways going on sale is pissing me off.
First party titles never going on sales is frankly infuriating. The only first party game that I currently own is NSMB, and only because it came with the system.
first party games ok, but fucking PORTS being full price in the first place and on top of that never going on sale...
Speaking of ports, Rayman Legends Ultimate edition is now on sale. Its a great fast paced couch co-op platformer, which makes NSMB look old and tired. The leaderboards are still active, despite being an older game.
yeah i found dekudeals to watch sales and build my wishlist, thx.
i'm still trying to follow my new years resolution of working through all the games i already own, nonono buy new ones, bad horder, bad!
You should just hack it, I don't usually say this about Nintendo but fuck them for this...I already bought the majority of this shit and it's barely updated as well.
Bad Nintendo.
You should at least give them credit for this. It's true that RC vehicles with first person cameras already exist, but using that for an augmented reality racing game is something new.
I suspect the price will be 'something new' too...and good luck getting one, just a rich kids toy, with acres of hard floor room to spare.
The worst and weirdest part for me was the fact that the 3d all stars pack does not have galaxy 2.
Directs in general aren't too exciting unless there's something you've been wanting for a while and it gets announced. They've been doing a lot of re-releases and using old IPs. I liked the one where they said they will do ports of SMT games, but everything else was kind if weak. They are a toy and video game company and have a family friendly audience. A lot of their stuff will sell, and some of it won't, but that's how it is with any video game company. The products you happen to see are just more reflective of what they are likely to sell. Even if you see it as something generic with Nintendo branding, you see this all the time with stuff that gets licensed, like "Star Wars" merchandise. It sells.
When I saw the Game-and-Watch announcement I was pretty jazzed, until I read further and realized how much of a ripoff and nostalgia bait it was. That thing damn well ought to have every NES game that Mario even had a cameo in on it for what they're doing, but nope - 2 games, a watch-game, and "Easter Eggs". Screw Nintendo for their low-effort garbage and screw the scalpers that are probably going to end up with 90% of the stock that Nintendo produces. I'll wait for a Chinese bootleg for a quarter of the price.
Depends on how hackable those "G&W" are. But you can already buy a chinese handheld that'll even run some psx and dreamcast games for around 80-100 dollars. But the general pubic are pretty dumb and will buy this instead.
Oh, no doubt there. Hell, they almost had me with the nostalgia bait. I had a couple of the single-screen LCD G&W units (Donkey Kong Jr. and Super Mario Bros - the original blue one) when I was a kid and I played the hell out of them, and this announcement hit me hard in the memories. Sure, it'd be nice to have one of these as a shelf-sitter for the collection, but after thinking about it for a while I decided it wasn't worth it. Like you said, it'd make more sense to hit up Amazon or Ali and get an RG350 unit, then load that sucker up with every ROM under the sun.
They really need to make some new games...all this rereleasing the entire WiiU library has gone too far.
They can stick these 'new' 3d mario games too bar sunshine.
One is too old and they just got shit on by a PC port, the other is too new and looks worse if anything.
